MELT for children and adults

A friend introduced me to MELT after experiencing better mobility and less stress. I was intrigued when she mentioned its impact on the nervous system and how it supports balance. It made me wonder how this gentle method could benefit children’s development and support adults with a range of symptoms too.

What is MELT?

MELT (Myofascial Energetic Length Technique) is a simple self-treatment method that is clinically proven to reduce chronic pain, stiffness, stress and tension by working on your fascia (sheets of connective tissue that are found below the skin). These tissues stabilise, impart strength and separate muscles amongst other jobs. Our gentle massaging techniques along with our soft tools increase fluid flow through the hands and feet to the whole body’s connective tissue (fascia), thereby creating a chain reaction and reducing pain, stiffness, stress, tension and enhancing overall mobility.

I’m trained to use the specially designed MELT therapy balls — not stress balls, but tools that mimic a therapist’s elbow and thumb. They’re soft yet incredibly durable, strong enough to support an adult’s weight. As you guide your own movements, you control the pressure, making it a blend of gentle exercise and self-massage.

Benefits of using MELT

Pain Reduction: Effective in alleviating chronic pain, particularly in areas like the back, neck, and joints, by rehydrating fascia and relieving pressure on nerves.

Improved Mobility: Movements become more coordinated, pencil pressure is better controlled, and letters appear less wobbly.

Stress Relief: MELT helps calm the nervous system, reducing tension and promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Better Posture: By realigning the body, MELT can improve posture, reducing strain and preventing long-term musculoskeletal issues.

Enhanced Performance: Whether you're an athlete or just looking for better movement, MELT supports muscle function and recovery, improving performance and reducing injury risk.

MELT Method, to help improve stability and mobility

MELT can be particularly useful for people experiencing:

Chronic pain (e.g., back, hip, shoulder pain)

Poor posture or alignment

Stiffness or limited range of motion

Stress and anxiety

Muscle imbalances

MELT for adults

During my sessions, you’ll use a specially designed small therapy ball to apply gentle pressure to your hands and feet. This simple technique targets imbalances in the nervous system and connective tissue, helping to realign the body and relieve tension and discomfort.

MELT is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, offering a proactive approach to maintaining a healthy, balanced body.

MELT for children

When working with children, we use the same small therapy ball to treat their hands and feet — just like in adult sessions.

In my experience, even a short 15-minute hand treatment can noticeably improve handwriting. Movements become more coordinated, pencil pressure is better controlled, and letters appear less wobbly.

After a 15-minute foot treatment, children often show improved balance, better body symmetry, and a calmer, more focused demeanor — making them more ready and receptive to learning.

We always consult with parents before introducing this technique, especially if the child is currently receiving other occupational therapy treatments. Our goal is to support — not overload — the child’s nervous system, and we make sure any approach we use is thoughtful, gentle, and well-integrated.

Examples of MELT in action and incorporating MELT into your life

Sue Hitzmann is an internationally recognised educator in neurofascial science and research and the creator of MELT. She recommends practicing the MELT Method for a minimum of 10 minutes, three times per week to begin experiencing its benefits. This frequency helps rehydrate connective tissue and rebalance the nervous system, leading to improved mobility and reduced pain.

MELT balls can be used at home anytime, it’s an easy routine to stick with. Personally, I loved joining group classes in Wokingham, led by a fully trained MELT instructor. We use a variety of tools to treat the whole body — it’s both effective and enjoyable.

I tried a modified ball treatment with my mum (78), who has serious spine issues and Parkinson’s. After just 15 minutes, her balance noticeably improved. My dad also benefited, as he mentioned that his very cold feet warmed up after about 10 minutes as a delayed effect.

During my MELT training, my instructor mentioned working with competitive athletes who report improved performance after just a few sessions, showcasing how effective the method can be for boosting mobility and recovery.
